Airline Passengers Bill of Rights in effect on April 29, 2010: what travelers need to know

While this is just the first step, passengers now have a bill of rights for flying.  The Department of Transportation’s rules for how long airlines can stay on the tarmac went into effect on April 29.  Airlines can now be fined up to $27,500 per passenger if a plane is not returned to the game after sitting on the tarmac for 3 hours.

Should passengers be excited over this?  While there is still legislation being debated in Congress for a passenger bill of rights, this is big news for passengers.  However, there are some warnings with these new rules.  What steps can passengers take to protect themselves?  What about food, drinks, and bathroom options while sitting on the plane?  What warnings are airlines giving in regard to this?

While a passenger bill of rights isn’t law yet, an important first step has been taken.
